Non-Communicable Diseases
The Growing Challenge
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like mental illness, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer are increasing rapidly across East Africa. Unfortunately, health systems are often unprepared and primarily reactive.
This leaves communities with a critical lack of early detection tools, limited community-based interventions, and fragmented or inaccessible chronic disease care—especially in underserved areas.
These gaps disproportionately affect women and newborns. For example, unmanaged hypertension and diabetes can increase pregnancy risks, while undiagnosed mental health conditions can harm the well-being of both mothers and children.
Our Integrated Approach
To address this challenge, the Center for Public Health and Development (CPHD) is integrating NCD prevention and care into maternal, newborn, and child health services.r futures for families
