Maternal and Newborn Health

Preventable Tragedies

Health systems in low-resource settings often struggle to provide timely, responsive care, leading to preventable deaths and complications for mothers and newborns. A key challenge is the failure to detect danger signs early, which delays critical interventions. This issue is compounded by under-resourced facilities, weak referral systems, and a lack of skilled healthcare providers. The slow adoption of life-saving innovations further exacerbates the problem. Addressing these systemic failures is crucial to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Strengthening Healthcare Through Innovation and Training

At the Center for Public Health and Development (CPHD), we're dedicated to improving the health workforce and healthcare infrastructure in Kenya. We achieve this by focusing on three key areas

Training and Mentorship

We empower healthcare professionals through simulation-based emergency training and mentorship, particularly for obstetric surgical teams. Our support for the nurse anesthetist training program has been transformative, leading to a remarkable 1,000% increase in the number of nurse anesthetists in the country. This initiative has been instrumental in expanding the number of functional Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care facilities in rural Kenya, ensuring more mothers and newborns receive critical care

Innovating Healthcare Infrastructure

We believe health workers deserve the best tools and environments to succeed. Our innovative solutions, such as solar-powered operating theaters and upgraded newborn units, provide a sustainable model for delivering high-quality emergency obstetric and neonatal care in remote areas. We also supply facilities with essential, low-cost technologies for infection prevention, thermal regulation, jaundice management, and respiratory support.

Integrating Technology at the Point of Care

To bring innovation directly to frontline services, CPHD champions the integration of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and AI-enabled diagnostics. We collaborate with the government and strategic partners to ensure these technologies are properly regulated, adopted, and used sustainably, making advanced diagnostics more accessible and efficient

Our Goal

By combining a skilled workforce, enabling environments, and frontline innovations, CPHD ensures mothers and newborns receive the care they need, when and where they need it most
