Maternal and Newborn Health

Too many mothers and newborns die or suffer complications because health systems fail to detect danger signs early, make timely referrals, or deliver responsive care in low-resource settings. These preventable deaths stem from under-resourced facilities, weak referral systems, limited provider skills, and slow adoption of life-saving innovations.

At CPHD, we strengthen the health workforce through simulation-based emergency training, and mentorship for obstetric surgical teams. We have supported the scale-up of nurse anesthetists training, leading to more than 1000% increase in the number of nurse anesthetists in Kenya. This program alone has significantly contributed to the increased number of functional Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care facilities in rural Kenya. We have also equipped health workers with the tools and environments they need to succeed. Our solar-powered operating theaters and upgraded newborn units provide a model for delivering comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care in remote areas. Through these initiatives, we continue to support facilities with essential, low-cost technologies for infection prevention, thermal regulation, jaundice management, and respiratory support.

To bring innovation closer to the point of care, CPHD has championed the integration of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and AI-enabled diagnostics into frontline services. We continue to work with the government and like-minded partners to ensure these technologies are regulated, adopted, and sustainably used.

Our goal is simple: healthy pregnancies, safe births, and stronger communities. By combining a skilled workforce, enabling environments, and frontline innovations, CPHD ensures mothers and newborns receive the care they need—when and where they need it most.
